Before Google...

My home page debuted in 1996, and it was very simple. I submitted my site to Yahoo directory listing under "Personal Exhibit". At that time, people liked to "surf the web", and Yahoo was the Internet super-star search site. They had staff "pre-surf" the sites to compile a list of interesting and informative sites, and published it into a book called "Yahoo Wild Web Rides". My page was picked and I was estastic. I still have this book in my bookcase as a memorabilia, but it's useless now because most of the links in it are no longer available.
