Game Design Game Design

As video games get more complex, so do the game user-interfaces. Layers of options, setups and descriptions, stack upon each other and require many buttons and menus to set them apart.

Bankshot Billiards is a game developed by PixelStorm Canada, and during the game development stage, they contacted me to work on the graphics and design of their menu system.

The amount of information to show was not a lot, so sub-menus were not considered. The major task was to design an area to display the player's name, an area to list available games and descriptions, and an area for the buttons.

Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max.

ABOVE: The color scheme is orange and yellow, an uncommon one for a game that frequently calls for a darker green or blue color scheme, as pool table felts are green and blue, and the environments where pool tables are located are usually a dim atmosphere. The graphic style applied to this design is a cool "broken polygons" sportive-look, which is popular in the 2000's.

ABOVE: Icons were also created with a 3D modeling program (without a second thought, because of the simplicity and easy rendering) as part of the user-interface design. They represent nine different game modes available in the game.

ABOVE: The design was submitted to PixelStorm in a Photoshop file, and they modified it as they saw fit. When the game was published, I noticed that they moved the name display to the left, and put their game logo on the right.

ABOVE & BELOW: The right-hand side of the screen is also used to display different game options.
