TravelKit is an electronic information center designed to run on airplanes installed with Rockwell Collin's In-Flight Entertainment system. It consists of travel guides, daily news, a game launcher, language training, in-flight shopping and destination information.
Information can be accessed with a touch of the screen, located in front of all passengers. The information is presented in HTML through a dedicated web browser running on the IFE system. The presentation, however, masks all the unnecessary functions of a full-feature web browser, and it is made to look like a mini kiosk program.
In the development stage, potential content providers were teamed to supply content for the prototype. Lonely Planet, a world renowned travel guide publisher, supplied an electronic version of their travel guides; and Berlitz, supplied language training materials. Skymall, also provided us with shopping catalogue contents and photos.
Banner ads are littered through out the pages of TravelKit, and would supply extra income for the airlines.
